Eddie, is that you? Most famously used by EVH, a phaser is a frequency shifter that moves through peaks and troughs of the frequency spectrum. Some have only one knob just controlling the speed, others have a large array of finite parameters to alter, but as long as it sounds good, it shouldn't phase you.
