Well built, great sounding amp

I love the Tone King Gremlin combo! I have some great amps, including a Fender Vibro King, but I wanted an amp with built in overdrive, and this Tone King Gremlin has just what I needed. It is so well built, point to point wiring. Sounds great. Have recorded a few songs with this amp so far, and it sounds very good. A slight downside: no standby switch, I have heard this causes the tubes to wear out faster. But no impact otherwise. The only tweak I am thinking of making is to replace the preamp tubes with two Genalex Gold Lion 12AX7 ECC83 tubes. For me, the cleaner of the two channels on the Gremlin kinda sounds a bit woolly or fuzzy when cranked to around 7 on the volume dial. I read in numerous forums online that the Genalex gold lion preamp tubes make the overdrive less fuzzy/woolly etc. But the drive sound on the second (more drive, tweed) channel sounds really good, even when pushed. Lastly, this thing is loud! I mean really loud! I think you could use this at smaller gigs and venues. Certainly loud enough for jams and parties etc. I really love the built in attenuator, it doesn't seem to affect the sound materially, and for me, I am able to crank the amp to 7 on either channel, get it to break up, yet be quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours by using the attenuator.

Overall - great amp, great tone, great features. Highly recommended!

Brilliant Old-school Fender tones and grit

Amazing tones on this little thing. In particular, the Rhythm channel has beautiful cleans and edge of break up tones, with the lead channel getting some pretty searing lead tones. I swapped out the 12AX7 preamp with a 12AY7 to tone down some of the gain on tap and it worked a treat. Love the full cathode biasing and I have the stock KT66, an EL34 and a 6L6 on rotation. Would thoroughly recommend for anyone who plays a lot at home like me!
